Northern Virginia Gains National ODP Honors
Royals, Majestics, and VA Alliance Earn 15 National Camp Player Selections
United Soccer Leagues announced earlier this week the player selections for the Super Y-League’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Camps to be held at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida next February.  Northern Virginia FC is well represented on the list of chosen attendees, claiming fifteen spots in the national elite pool.

Each nominated player has been identified as one of the top players in their birth year, and among the top 2% of players in the previous 2012 Super Y-League season.

The ODP Program, which brings together top players from across the United States and Canada, is a crucial component of the USL Super Y-League, offering the best players from the U13 to U17 age groups a chance to receive top-quality coaching and the opportunity to be scouted by U.S. National Team and college coaches. This year’s ODP age groups will feature the top players (approximately 192 girls & 192 boys) from the U13/U14 and U15/U16 age divisions.

The camps will once again be held at the world-class facilities of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, home to the U.S. Soccer U-17 Residency Program and site of the recent Super Y-League North American Finals. USL National Technical Director Peter Mellor, who has spent the past 19 years as a member of the U.S. National Staff and 26 years as an ODP coach, will direct the camps.

The world’s largest and most advanced multi-sport training and education complex, IMG Academy has hosted myriad soccer team training camps in 2012, including clubs such as the Seattle Sounders, D.C. United, Columbus Crew, Sweden’s Malmö FF, as well as the U.S. Women’s National Team preparing for the London Olympic Games and the Antigua & Barbuda Men’s National Team preparing for World Cup qualifying.

Northern Virginia Football Club, comprised of the Northern Virginia Royals (male), Northern Virginia Majestics (female), and Virginia Alliance (male and female) USL teams, is represented by five teams in the 2012 North American Finals as well as 26 players in the previous SYL ODP Camp pool.

The total number of Northern Virginia selections dropped in 2012 largely due to the USL’s decision to eliminate the U17/U18 age group selection list named in previous years.
