"The launching of USL Live was a tremendous success for the USL First Division this past season as it gave fans the ability to watch every USL-1 game for the first time in league history," said USL Director of Public Relations Gerald Barnhart. "We wanted to duplicate that historical benchmark with the Super Y-League North American Finals, a premier championship event."

The U14 Northern Virginia Royals amazing run in the 2007 North American Super Y-League Championships ended just short of the title, falling 1-0 to Arsenal FC in the tournament final. A second half of relentless pressure was not enough to equalize Arsenal’s first half goal, leaving the Royals just shy of a Cinderella ending.

An emerging staple in the strong soccer region of Southern California, Arsenal FC landed teams in Tuesday’s U14 and U15 boys North American Finals. The South Atlantic Division Northern Virginia Royals were fresh off a 2-1 win over Canada’s Mountain WFC in the semi-final match the previous day and proved an even truer test of Arsenal’s mettle.

Northern Virginia Advances to North American Final
U14 Royals Upset Vancouver Club to Earn Chance at Championship Title
The Northern Virginia Royals U14 Super Y-League squad bested a tough Mountain WFC 2-1, catapulting them into the tournament final and a chance at the North American Championship title.  Two goals in the first half proved just enough to topple Mountain as the Royals advanced courtesy of the 2-1 result.

Early pressure and fervent intensity provided the catalyst for the upstart U14 Royals.  Andrew Whitlock got the Royals on the board first, pouncing on a scramble in front of the Mountain net and burying home the ball for the early lead.  Mountain WFC mounted several counter-attack opportunities, but the Royals defensive third held the game in check.  With the final minutes of the first half counting down, Royal Tyler ’TC’ Dunn fired a blistering shot over the Mountian goalkeeper, only to see it kareen loudly off the crossbar back into play.  A charging Nick Smirniotopolous struck true and rocketed the ball untouched back into the Mountain net for the 2-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw a stepped up attack by the Mountain side.  Realizing the task at hand, Mountain drew the game close on a goal early in the half.  The Royals responded and reorganized a strong defensive third the maintain the lead and earn the 2-1 victory.

U14 Royals Earn Spot in Super Y-League Championships
Northern Virginia to Send Four Teams to North American Finals
The Northern Virginia Royals U14 Super Y-League team second place finish in their South Atlantic Division bracket proved enough to gain entry into the United Soccer Leagues Youth North American Finals. The U14 Royals join the U17 Royals, U16 Royals, and U16 Majestics for the trip to Florida and the chance at a North American title.

The U17 Royals (5-3-5) finished the season 5-3-5 two points behind the CASL Railhawks (NC) but posted a 3-1-2 record in the state to qualify for the championship tournament. The Royals finished undefeated against perennial powerhouses Richmond Kickers and Richmond Strikers, earning three wins and a tie during the Super Y-League season. The U14 Royals only state loss came at the hands of the upstart FC Fredericksburg, dropping a 1-0 decision on the Gunners’ home pitch.

The Royals are joined by the Atlanta Silverbacks Jrs, the winners of the Group A South Atlantic Division bracket in the U14 age group.
