United Soccer Leagues announced today the USL Premier Development League Team of the Week for the fifth week of the USL season, honoring the the top players for their performance in the prior seven days of play. Northern Virginia Royal Sean Kelly was named to the eleven-member team for his outstanding play in preserving the 1-1 draw against the Reading Rage.
The majority of the Team of the Week commendations went to defenders and goalkeepers, who stole the show in the PDL’s second weekend. Leading the way was Northern Virginia goalkeeper Sean Kelly, who saw 18 shots and made eight saves in Reading, where the Royals escaped with a 1-1 draw against the defending PDL Eastern Conference Champions.
“He made eight saves and anchored a defense that stopped 17 of 18 shots by the Rage,” said Reading General Manager Art Auchenbach. “[That] included several point-blank chances.”
The Royals return to action this weekend as they travel to Cary on Saturday for a rematch of Sunday’s 3-2 loss. The Royals return home the following week on Saturday, May 23rd, to face the Hampton Roads Piranhas at Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia. Match time is set for 7:00PM.
