Super 20 Royals Earn Trip to North American Finals Northern Virginia Opens Championship Tournament with Chivas USA
The Northern Virginia Royals Super 20 League team earned the final wild card bid into the United Soccer Leagues Super 20 North American Finals to be held next weekend in Rockford, Illinois. A scoreless draw with Triangle FC gave the Royals squad the single point necessary to earn the spot in the championship tournament.
The Super 20 Royals finished the season 4-1-3, only losing to South Atlantic Division opponent Charlotte SC during their 2009 campaign. Alpharetta United (GA) won the South Atlantic title outright with a 6-1-1 record. Northern Virginia and Alpharetta met once this season with a staggering 4 – 4 draw that demonstrated both teams ability to score.
Group stage pairings for the four day tournament were fashioned by the USL Front Office. Factors in establishing the groups included winning percentage and the avoidance of repeat matchups between regular season opponents. An emphasis on strength of schedule/division was also part of the process.

Northern Virginia Super 20s Start Season with Wins Majestics and Royals Each Triumph Over Fredericksburg Squads
Sunday afternoon saw FC Fredericksburg travel to Northern Virginia’s Valley View Park to kick off both the men’s and women’s South Atlantic Division of the USL Super-20 League. The day would belong to Northern Virginia as the Majestics cruised to a 4-0 win before the Royals edged the Gunners 1-0 in the pair of shutouts.
The Majestics began their season following a 4-3-3 record in 2008 with more maturity and composure, as a majority of the players have returned from the previous year Super 20 and U17 Majestics teams. The collective experience on the team showed, as several Northern Virginia Super Y-League alumni combined for the four goals on the afternoon. Chrissy Parker notched two goals, while Leigh Ann Baxter and Shondel Archer each nabbed a goal and assist for the match. Kristen Smith earned an assist along with goalkeeper Audrey Moore on an alert play up the field.
The Super 20 Royals and Gunners battled nearly the entire game before the deciding goal was scored. Northern Virginia midfielder Eber Martinez sent a driven cross into the Fredericksburg goal mouth and found teammate Aaron Ross, who volleyed the ball untouched into the Gunners net in the 85th minute. The goal held, and the Royals found themselves on the winning side of the 1-0 result.

From the Inside with Mike Foss Super 20 North American Finals Wrap Up
Tuesday August 5, 2008
In his second season of USL Premier Development League competition with the Royals, Mike Foss, defender and journalist, has logged over 550 minutes this season, and over 900 minutes with the 2007 squad.
Foss got his start with the Super Y-League’s ODP system in January of 2007 where he was competing for a spot on the SYL Select Team. Revealing his interest in journalism during the camps, Foss began writing for USLSoccer.com after he joined the Northern Virginia Royals Premier Development League team as an 18-year old later that season.
In the early summer of 2008, Foss again stepped up the U.S. soccer ladder by earning an invitation to train with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. In just a year-and- a-half Foss has successfully climbed from the Super Y-League’s U17 level to MLS. He was most recently a member of the Royals Super-20 League side that battled, and fell to a strong D.C. United side 2-1 at the North American Finals. This is the fourth edition of From the Inside for the 2008 season.

To say July has been eventful for me would be a gross understatement.
Super 20 Royals Advance to USL North American Finals Northern Virginia to Compete for Continental Title
The Northern Virginia Royals Super 20 League team, currently residing in second place in the South Atlantic Division, earned an automatic berth into the United Soccer Leagues Super 20 North American Finals. Last Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over nearby rival Fredericksburg Gunners awarded the Royals a spot in the prestigious tournament.
The Super 20 Royals finished the season 5-2-3, only losing to South Atlantic Division leader Carolina Dynamo during their 2008 campaign. With two games remaining, the Hampton Roads Piranhas could move ahead of the Northern Virginia, but their place in the finals is already insured as tournament hosts. Fredericksburg loss to the Royals mathematically eliminates them from contention, despite still having two games to play.
The Super 20 Royals opened the 2008 season undefeated in their first six games, with several close decisions in a very tight South Atlantic Division. After suffering back-to-back losses to the upstart Dynamo, the Royals claimed their spot in the finals by beating East Tennessee and Fredericksburg in the final three days of their season schedule.
