The Northern Virginia Majestics were routed in their season opener, falling 5-0 to the Tampa Bay Hellenic last evening at Ed Radice Sports Complex in Tampa, Florida. Four first half goals enabled the home side to easily cruise to victory over the beleaguered Majestics.
A youthful Majestics squad struggled defensively throughout the first forty-five minutes, allowing Tampa to pepper the Northern Virginia goal with 15 shots. Additionally, the Majestics were unable to contain Hellenic Chelsea Klotz (University of South Florida), as the pesky forward scored four goals on the night.
With the game well decided by a 4-0 Tampa lead at half-time, Northern Virginia none-the-less found some offensive tempo in the second half of play. Newcomer Kristen Lybert, recently promoted from the Super-20 Majestics for the trip to Tampa, nearly found the Hellenic goal on a feed from Brieana White. However Tampa managed the threat, keeping the visitors off the scoreboard.
In addition to Lybert, Northern Virginia promoted four other Super-20 players to complete the weekend roster against the Hellenic.
Klotz scored her final goal late in the second half from a Sarah Chapman (University of Florida) pass to cap the 5-0 rout. Chapman was equally impressive, earning four assists for the match.
Northern Virginia opens their home season in two weeks, facing the Atlanta Silverbacks on Saturday, May 29th at George Mason University Turf Field in Fairfax, Virginia. Match time is scheduled for 5:30PM. Immediately following the match, the Northern Virginia Royals take on the Carolina Dynamo in men’s PDL action.
